Streamlined project cycle, direct access to funds, and new country support program part of ambitious agenda

 

Washington, D.C.  July 2, 2010 – The governing body of the world’s largest public environmental fund, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this week approved major reforms aimed at improving access by and achieving results on the ground in developing countries looking to meet international environmental challenges related climate change, biodiversity and other global challenges.

Washington, DC, April 8, 2009 – The GEF Earth Fund Board, a private sector advisory group to the GEF Council designed to help international financial institutions strengthen the engagement of business in delivering global environmental benefits to the world’s most vulnerable, met today for the first time.

The World Bank's Board of Directors today approved an Efficient Lighting Project for the City of Lome for the Republic of Togo. Supported by a Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant totaling US$1.82 million (approximately CFAF 900 million), this project will help

(i) disseminate at least 400,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to replace incandescent light bulbs currently in use;

(ii) organize outreach and awareness-building campaigns aimed at promoting an energy efficiency culture; and
