Male, Maldives, March 13-16, 2011

The Fifth Session of the South West Indian Fisheries Commission (SWIOF) was organized upon invitation of the government of Maldives from the 13 to the 16 of March 2011 in the the Nasandhura Hotel in Male, Maldives. The session was opened and facilitated by the HE Dr. Hussein Rasheed Hassan, Minister of Fisheries who took part in every session and showed a strong commitment on this key issue for all coastal and island countries of the region.

Monique Barbut, we are hearing a lot about the Green Wall. Can you explain the concept to us?
The Green Wall is an initiative spearheaded by African Heads of State to combat soil degradation in a zone spanning Senegal to Djibouti. The wall is a visual concept symbolizing the collective work we all have to do in order to combat environmental degradation, in particular desertification and the impoverishment of populations.

Washington DC, February 22, 2011 - As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, the GEF in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme's Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) hosted an exhibit at the annual meeting of the world's largest general scientific society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), publisher of Science Magazine.

Buenos Aires, February 1st, 2011 – The Argentine Republic is preparing its Third National Communiqué on Climate Change, a study that will provide updated information regarding its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, allowing it to identify mitigation measures for the country. 

The initiative will benefit from a US$2.4 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and will be carried out with the collaboration of the World Bank as implementation agent.
